If you haven’t been to see Lion yet, please do! I’m still absolutely gobsmacked that it’s based on a true story and it’s definitely not one to miss. The little boy who plays Saroo is literally so cute you’ll want to adopt him yourself and if Dev Patel doesn’t get the Oscar for Supporting Actor, then he’s been robbed in my opinion! Not that I’ve seen Moonlight, Hell or High Water, Manchester by the Sea or Nocturnal Animals to judge…
The film is certainly a tearjerker to say the least and there are parts that are tense enough to give the most level headed person a nervous break down, but simultaneously it’s the most uplifting film I’ve seen in a long time. I’m pretty sure my mum sobbed from beginning to end, through sadness, stress, relief and happiness combined. I think I’ll put this down to motherhood, because thinking of your own child in that situation has got to be a parent’s worst nightmare!
If you’re not familiar with Lion, the film portrays the story of an Indian man called Saroo Brierley, who at the age of just five got lost on a train, separating him from his family. Finding himself stranded thousands of miles away from home, he was left to fend for himself in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later he sets out to track down down his family using the newly invented Google Earth. I’ll leave you to watch the film to find out the rest!
P.S. Dev Patel has blossomed since Skins!
