We’ve got to that time of year again, where every morning turns into a mission to find an outfit that is both weather appropriate AND suitable for the office. Well the good news is that you don’t always have to choose between fashion and warmth!
If your workplace has a formal dresscode in place it can often feel quite restrictive, but don’t panic as there are plenty of different ways to layer up, at the same time as looking smart!
If on the other hand you’re lucky enough to work in a slightly more laid back environment, you’ve got plenty of flexibility to be creative with your outfit and find a combination that looks great and keeps you feeling snug all day long.
Here are a few of our top pointers to make dressing for work in the winter an absolute breeze (and a warm breeze at that).
Layer a roll neck underneath
A collection of roll necks will be your saving grace over the winter months. They’re perfect for dressing up or down and make the ultimate layering item. The mistake that many people make, however, is thinking that you can only layer on top, when layering underneath is actually a lot more flattering and looks super stylish when done right. Update your wardrobe for the colder weather by getting creative and layering a simple roll neck underneath a sleeveless dress, a tailored suit or even an oversized jumper.
Pop a jumper over your blouse
By popping a jumper on over the top of a blouse, you’ve got a quick and easy winter work uniform. This classic combo needn’t be boring though, as by playing with different colours and textures you can add some real depth and individuality to your outfit. Some wide leg trousers are perfect for adding a bit of an edge to the look, while maintaining an air of sophistication. Top it all off with some refined leather accessories and voila, you’ve got the perfect work ready look!
Invest in a good coat
A smart coat can give your outfit and instant style upgrade, so it’s well worth investing in a high quality staple piece. A neutral tone is a great choice, as you can layer it over the top of almost any outfit in your wardrobe. Opt for a longline design in wool or cashmere to create an elegant look that will make a great first impression when you step into the office each morning.
Knee high boots vs. tights
As the temperature drops, most of us reach for the trusty black tights as a bid to extend the life of our favourite dresses and skirts over the winter months. If you’re not feeling the tights, however, pair some knee high boots with a dress or skirt for an extra layer of warmth. Make sure the hem of your skirt overlaps the top of your boots to avoid exposing your skin to the chill!
Boots, boots and more boots
While we’re on the topic of boots, I’d just like to add just how thankful you’ll be for a good pair of boots when the winter weather kicks in! Walking to work in court shoes when it’s raining or even snowing is just an absolute no no, so it’s definitely a good idea to swap them for a sleek ankle boot. If you can’t live without your heels, opt for a pair with a block heel, for comfort and practicality.
A scarf will be your best friend on those chilly winter days. Not only do they add a really stylish touch to even the most minimalist of outfits, but they’re also fantastic for doubling up as a shawl if you need a little extra warmth. A chunky knitted scarf looks fantastic peeking out of the neckline of your coat and is just what you need to protect yourself from the elements on a blustery day.
